"For the first time, a non-camouflaged Lucid Air has taken to the public road. Lucid's CEO, Peter Rawlinson, took a release candidate vehicle out in the Bay Area of California to film the first drive and gave some remarkably candid thoughts to a camera as he went. Overall he was pleased with the ride quality, how the suspension is tuned, and the car's composure on the road. He also comments on how quiet and refined the interior is. "I wanted this vault-like experience from an electric car that no one's perfected yet," Rawlinson said.
It appears the Air is right where Lucid wants it leading up to production, but we like that Rawlinson is happy to point out the areas the company needs to work on.
Rawlinson points out that the hill-hold technology needs some adjustment, and low-speed driving needs to be smoothed out up to two miles per hour. He's also impressed at how the "blend" of the regenerative braking is coming along and how it's "beginning to get nice." He also mentions that the regenerative braking force in sport mode is now tuned more aggressively, changing from 0.25g to 0.3g of braking force when the accelerator is released.
Recently, Lucid announced it would delay production of the Air until the second half of 2021 to take more time to "get the quality right." This video helps make the case that Lucid is serious about making sure the Air is everything the company wants it to be.
At the end of the video, we see Rawlinson respond to someone off-camera complimenting the looks of the Air. He explains that it's the first time it has been out on the road without camouflage and describes it as his "baby." We don't blame him for having a little boast about its 1,000 horsepower and 500 miles of range as it has been a long and treacherous road for Lucid to get this close to production."
