I was!

my husband and I were back and forth quite a bit between them. We lucked out and test drove both this week.

the Lucid was hands down dramatically better interior quality than the EQS. The EQShad a disturbing amount of cheap plastic throughout it. There was pretty much none in the Lucid.

the driving feel is dramatically different between the two, and I vastly preferred the Lucid.

When I first saw the EQS it didn't seem like a S-Class to me. The front is good but the back half didn't look right. This part of the review reinforces that for me.

The rest of the EQS' cabin is relatively straightforward and familiar, though if we hold fast to the idea of this serving as the S-Class of EVs, the interior is the largest disconnect. There's plenty of limo-esque legroom, but thanks to battery packaging and overall odd proportions, rear passengers have a tall knee angle thanks to a high floor that could prove uncomfortable for some. Still, both front and back seats are large and very comfortable, lending a lounge-like feel to the whole experience.

Welcome to the forum @Paladin732! What about the Air's driving dynamic stood out compared to the EQS? Have you and your husband placed an order for an Air?

IMHO they aren't comparable. The EQS is a full sized vehicle while the Lucid is a mid sized vehicle.

Personally, I prefer a smaller vehicle and while I am currently driving a mid sized vehicle, it and the Lucid are as big as I am willing to go.

Even if I preferred the EQS (which I don't), I would not ever get it because it is just too big!

Yep. We went with a Dream Edition, currently waiting for vin

That is a major focus for us. It’s a foot longer!
When I went to park it after test driving it, the spot next to the charge spot had a Dodge Durango, a 3-row SUV in it. It was the same length! It would be a pain to deal with on a routine basis.

I was set on an EQS 580. I had a deposit and car reserved. It arrived at the dealership and was ready to be sold on Dec 6th (the cars actual release date). The dealer called to let me know there would be a $50k market adjustment on it. That was it for me. Insane to get a depreciating asset and already be $50k in the hole. They ultimately lowered it to $30k as a 'favor.' Of course I still passed and asked for a refund. The dealer model is flawed and fundamentally broken. That's what brought me back to Lucid when a Dream reservation opened up.

Ahh, they are a Fletcher Jones dealer.
The one in Fremont, CA is one also. They were the highest in the Bay Area when I was looking. 50k for a 580 and they were planning on 100k if they got an Edition One. The Fremont one was terrible also, when we looked at their S class, they had us talk to a rep that was in a dingy basement back area that required badge access to get to and was filled with old computers.

It’s a shame, the service department at their Porsche dealer right next to them in Fremont is great.

This is a fear we have if we decided to wait for the EQS. We have one on order from MB San Jose (Autonation), and they are promising MSRP. However, they never took a deposit, so we are skeptical.

Was anyone here considering the EQS at some point?

My Lucid Dream deposit goes back to September 2018. However, when the Mercedes Vision Concept car emerged on the scene, I began to think I might consider it as an alternative to the Lucid, as I thought the Vision was the most beautiful car I had ever seen.

As Lucid's production start moved from late 2019 to 2020 and into 2021, I really began following what MB was doing.

But then the actual production version of the EQS was unveiled and, yowsa . . . I almost fell off my chair. They seemed to have inflated a Reese's easter egg, slapped chrome on every exterior crease they could find, and turned a committee of brothel and casino decorators loose on the interior, all of whom hold stock in LED light strip manufacturers.

Then the final performance specs got released, and any lingering thoughts about the EQS evaporated.

It baffles me how the company that designed the outgoing S Class, which is one of the cleanest and most elegant sedans inside and out that I have ever seen, could have unleashed this hot mess of a design on the public.

And, with a wheelbase 10" longer than a Lucid but an interior cabin no longer, they still couldn't find any place for the power electronics but under the front hood.

Drove a EQS 580 a week ago in Ft Worth. Beats the new 2021 Tesla S Model in every way. EQS is the quietest car I've ridden in and I own a S Coupe to compare it with. I found it a very comfortable car to drive in vs Tesla etc. And the EQS has a round steering wheel unlike that sorry thing in a Tesla called a yoke/joke. i'm adapting to it though even though it's a sorry butt design.

I hear/ read the Lucid, (which I have deposit on a GT) , is noisy on the interstate. Probably a lot quieter than a S Model Tesla, but I do read it is a bit noisy. Noisy as in tire/road noise, not wind noise.

It seems to me, that all claims of Range should be multiplied by 80% to get close to the real range on interstate hwys of speeds of 75 mph plus. Such as a Tesla S Model with a EPA claimed range of 405 miles is really a Lot closer to 325 miles.

As for Edmunds 'real range of xxxxx' car.......they test in Ca and i"ve yet to see a posted speed limit in Ca higher than 70 mph.......so Edmunds is useless/bogus as far as their claimed range.

EV's seem, at least to me, to be for people who are regional drivers and just go to work and back and grocery shop. Almost have to own a decent gasoline/diesel vehicle to actually 'go anywhere'. Here's hoping Tesla opens up it's supercharger network to other vehicles. But then again, I read where Tesla will charge you more at one of those stations if it's not Tesla. All other charging networks seem to have much lower charging ability.

Forgot to mention.....EQS has four wheel steering which makes it easy to turn considering its long wheel base. Not that large a car imho.

I'm really curious, do you happen to know the size of tire on your test vehicle? All the complaints about road noise in the Lucid were on cars that were on 21" tires. Also, using it as a daily driver, road noise is non existent with music on or having conversation.

I have been constantly saying that EVs need at least a 500mile / 1000 km range before they are practical as an ICE replacement, but am continually rebuffed be everyone saying “why? You need to take breaks. That range is way overkill” You being up my point number 1. There is a difference between EPA range and real range. It is true for every car I have seen, wether ICE or EV. Point 2 is that one doesn’t go to 100%, below 20 for battery health. That means you multiply range by 60%. Point 3 is charging speed. It takes too long for most EVs to get from 20 to 80, especially if you are not doing a meal break. However, with that, I have reserved an AGT and do believe that it has the range and the charging speed to be the first EV capable of replacing an ICE.

Here's hoping Tesla opens up it's supercharger network to other vehicles. But then again, I read where Tesla will charge you more at one of those stations if it's not Tesla. All other charging networks seem to have much lower charging ability.

don’t need or want the Tesla network. A Lucid will actually charge slower on a Tesla super charger than a 350v EA charger.

I was watching a YouTube video a couple of days ago of two professional drivers testing a modified Plaid on a track. As one of the drivers was fighting to get the car back under control in a skid, he accidentally honked the horn because of the silly button placements on the yoke. I laughed . . . and then I cried.

It ranges from Kyle Conner of "Out of Spec Motoring", who found tire noise, especially in the rear seat, more prominent than he had expected, to Doug DeMuro of "Cars and Bids", who commented on how quiet the Lucid Air was, especially in terms of tire noise, which he found extremely low for 21" tires.

It's just one of those things that potential buyers are going to have to assess for themselves to know how the car will really work for them.


Did you happen to check out the rear seat of the EQS? Even though its wheelbase is 10" longer than an Air's, I've seen two reviewers who found their knees were more jacked up in the EQS than in the Air and that the EQS had less rear headroom than the Air, despite the EQS being several inches taller.

Amen. As I've posted elsewhere, I only expect to see ~250 miles of range on my Air Dream Performance w/ 21" wheels on road trips. In order to protect the battery and have margin in case of unexpected road/weather conditions, I plan charging stops based on using 70% of the pack's capacity (90% - 20%). Then, as I intend to drive near or slightly above the average speed of traffic (78 mph on U.S. interstates), I assume the car will get -- at best -- 80% of EPA-rated range. Thus, 451 miles (EPA) x 0.70 (useable pack capacity) x 0.80 (real-world range loss) = 252 miles.

As that's still more than three hours of driving at 80 mph, that's fine with me for a road trip. But, as you say, it takes an EPA rating of nearly 500 miles to get to a real road trip range of 250-280 miles.

curious...what do you consider a large car if 207 inches is not large? The EQS is the same size as a BMW 7 series.

I chatted with Peter Rawlinson at the opening for the Millbrae center and he was passionate about the fact that their wheelbase is 10" shorter than the EQS, but has 2" more legroom.
